Tara Hyland - Daughters of Fortune

5 MARCH 2010

Obviously the big news of the month (excluding the Cheryl and Ashley split) is that Daughters of Fortune goes on sale in the UK on 18 March, and is already out in other Commonwealth countries (went on sale in Ireland at end of Feb). I've started to see a few reviews from bloggers, which I'm going to share (mainly because they say nice things!): Girlie Gossip magazine: "As a debut novel, this is one of the best I've read. I'm desperate to read more of Miss Hyland's work, so please get writing."  Lori's Little Treasures: "Daughters of Fortune has great realistic characters, love, family, suspense and a truly compelling and original plot. I'm looking forward to seeing more from Tara Hyland." Chicklit Club: "This is a thoroughly enjoyable blockbuster of a read - and an impressive debut."

I'll update this site as I learn of events to celebrate the launch, but here's one date for the diary for Londoners (taken from Simon & Schuster UK Facebook): "For all you fashionistas out there, we are inserting a samper for Tara Hyland's fabulous new novel Daughters Of Fortune into Westfield's Greatest Fashion Event goodie bags. The sampler will contain a half price voucher to be redemed in WHSmith. So, if you are at Westfield between 18th and 20th March, grab yourself a bag and get yourself a bargian."

My big, humiliating experience of the month was going to make a series of three short films about my book. Now, some people might think this is a real treat, but I reckon for most writers, being the centre of attention is hell! I felt like an awkward teenager again as I stepped in front of the camera, and stuttered my way through an introduction to my book. The director and my publisher's website manager (Ally Glynn) were extremely patient with me, and when I finally forced myself to watch the results, I came across as surprisingly calm and collected (if a bit geeky and posh!) I'm not putting any links on here, because it's just too excrutiating, but I'm sure if you search hard enough, you'll find the videos on YouTube. Amusingly, the one called 'Tara Hyland Revealed' has generated the most viewings - and a one star rating! My husband suggested that whoever rated it must have been disappointed when all I revealed was my pet peeve. Next time - I'll film in a bikini!

I also finished the first draft of Book 2, and sent it off my my editors and agent. I'm now waiting anxiously for their verdict. They all keep saying things like they "can't wait to read it" and they "know it'll be brilliant". How!? I sure as hell don't!
